What's going on at Church of the Cross?  Check out the following headlines adapted from The Reporter, our monthly newsletter.  For news about our Youth Fellowship, see this month's Youth activities page.

  • Joy Unbounded 20th anniversary concert

To celebrate 20 years of bringing musical joy to Church of the Cross, the vocal quintet Joy Unbounded (Debbie Robillard, Dave Washburn, Doug & Joyce Evenden, and Nita Gerstle) will be giving a concert on Sunday, May 18 at 1:30 pm in the sanctuary.  Immediately before the concert, at 12:30, we will be having a carry-in meal in the church social room.  Drinks and table service will be provided with the meal, but everyone is encouraged to bring a favorite meat, side dish, or dessert.

  • Mother-Daughter Banquet to feature Spotlite Kidz

The Mother-Daughter Banquet will be held on Friday, May 9, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. in the Social Hall. The entertainment will be “Spotlite Kidz” theatrical group.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12 years old. Tickets will be available after both services on Sunday, May 4.

  • Director of the Year award

The Dayton Association for Young Children has awarded Chris Farris their Director of the Year Award. The award signifies the commitment and dedication Chris has shown in the field of early childhood education. Chris has been the director of our World of Love pre-school for over 11 years, and World of Love has consistently met the highest licensing standards under Chris’ leadership.

  • Six delegates to attend Annual Conference from COTC

Three of our youth are delegates to the West Ohio Annual Conference in Lakeside, Ohio, June 8-12, representing the Miami Valley District. These youth, who will participate fully in the Conference with voting privileges, are Ashley Grinstead, Bethany Spieth, and Michael Whitaker. This is especially exciting because this is the year the three Africa University interns visiting our district will be staying at the Turtle (the home owned by the Gerstles and graciously offered to all the delegates from Church of the Cross). This will give our youth a greater opportunity to know our own intern, Sylvain Illunga from the Congo.

Furthermore, our lay leader, Lisa Adams, and Pastor John Whitaker, will be representing Church of the Cross, and Sandy McElfresh will be attending as an at-large delegate also for the Miami Valley District.

  • New Sunday morning studies beginning

A new study on Christianity's Family Tree: What Other Christians Believe and Why will begin May 11 in the Social Room at 11:00 am. This study reviews Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Lutheranism, Presbyterianism, Anglicanism, Baptists, Pentecostalism, and Methodism. For each group the class will look at a brief history, outline of major beliefs, and valuable perspectives to strengthen our own faith. The material is presented in a video and discussion format.

The Seekers class is starting a study of Ecclesiastes this month using Warren Wiersbe's book Be Satisfied as a guide.  Questions addressed include "can we escape the monotony of life?", "who can explain life's inconsistencies?" and "should we 'eat, drink, and be merry'?"  The class meets in room 10 from 9:30 to 10:30 am.

  • Love First Miracle Offering on May 25

For the last several years, the West Ohio Conference has invited us as a church to participate in a Love First Miracle Offering at Annual Conference. This offering will be shared between the Nothing But Nets initiative to stamp out the killer disease of malaria and the emerging United Methodist Church in Vietnam and the Methodist Church of Cambodia, with whom we in West Ohio have a covenant partnership. Our Love First Offering will be on May 25th. We will have one of our youth delegates place the check from Church of the Cross in the offering plate at Annual Conference.

  • Spring Clean-Up Day

Do you have four hours to help beautify your church? There’s a task for everyone. You don’t have to be “handy” or experienced—just willing to work.  Join us on Saturday, June 7, from 8 am till noon.

  • It takes a village to raise a pastor

Check out this month's issue of The Reporter for an article by Jane Wise, the Project Coordinator for Africa University Interns.  She describes the many hardships involved in choosing to become a pastor in Africa, particularly the sacrifices that must be made in order for a theology student to attend Africa University.
